That was fast. Katie Holmes filed for divorce from Tom Cruise on Thursday, June 28; the news broke on Friday, June 29; and in the past two weeks, the media has gone crazy covering the split, with both sides taking little jabs at the other. But now, Monday, July 9, the couple has reached a settlement.
Katie's attorney told People, "the case has been settled and the agreement has been signed. We are thrilled for Katie and her family and are excited to watch as she embarks on the next chapter of her life. [...] We thank Tom's counsel for their professionalism and diligence that helped bring about this speedy resolution."
In a separate statement from their reps, Katie and Tom said they were focused on protecting their daughter. "We are committed to working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suri's best interests. We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other's roles as parents."
That “beliefs” part kinda sounds like “Stop leaking stories that diss Scientology,” no? According to People's sources, the couple is working on an arrangement where Suri would live in New York with Katie but Tom would have generous visitation rights. "They both love their daughter," says one source, "and Tom thinks she should be with her mother." That sounds like a win for Katie, but also a good way to make sure little Suri still has a close relationship with both parents. Very mature of them!
