This is where it gets interesting.

Yes, it's easy to find punchlines in the official split of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes — and some people are already snarking that he simply didn't renew their five-year marriage contract (come on, guys) — but it's always sad when a couple jacks up the American divorce rate even further. However, when rich people split up, you have to wonder what happens to the money, the houses, the cars, the artwork, and the other valuable stuff they collect along the way.

This isn't Tom's first unsuccessful walk down the aisle. He was married to actress Mimi Rogers from 1987 to 1990 and Nicole Kidman from 1990 to 2001. Tom and Katie were married from November 2006 to right about now. Since Tom has been making serious money as an actor/producer since the 1980s, you can bet he's figured out ways to protect his assets.

After today’s divorce news came out, TMZ reported, "We're told Tom and Katie have a prenup. The net worth of both Tom and Katie is around $275 mil, but clearly Tom raked in most of that."

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Katie is "worth" about $25 million to Tom’s estimated $250 million. That’s not counting the value of whatever property they own together. For example, back in 2007, Tom and Katie reportedly purchased a home in L.A. for over $30 million. They also have a residence in the upscale American Felt Building in New York City.

Once Tom and Katie figure out how to divide up everything, they’ll have to negotiate custody of Suri — their most prized possession. According to TMZ, Katie wants sole legal custody and primary residential custody of their 6-year-old girl.
