This is not a joke, people: Maverick may jet back onto the big screen after 25 years of radio silence.
While promoting Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol in Dubai yesterday, Tom Cruise spilled to MTV News, "We're working on it."
The Top Gun 2 rumor mill started churning a little over a year ago, when fans began speculating that a long-awaited sequel to the 1986 hit was in the works — with director Tony Scott, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and star Tom Cruise all involved. Scott said he would direct, and someone was hired to write a script, but the buzz quickly fizzled.
Now it seems the project has once again found its wings. Cruise dished, "I said to Tony I want to make another movie with him. He and I haven't made a film since Days of Thunder. Tony and I and Jerry, we never thought that we would do it again. Then they started to come to us with these ideas of where it is now. I thought, 'Wow, that would be [...] what we could do now.'"
Wow indeed. If this ridiculousness actually happens, we hope 49-year-old Cruise is smart enough to keep his shirt on during the inevitable beach volleyball scene... unless CGI comes into play. Maybe that’s part of the “What we could do now... “
Because one thing’s for sure: Tom is no longer 1980s-era Maverick.
