Tom Cruise hasn't said much about last summer's split with Katie Holmes. We know it took him by surprise, but that's about it.

Now Tom is out promoting his new film Oblivion, and he talked to German TV about Katie's decision to end their marriage. "I did not expect that," Tom said (via E! News). But Tom, ever the optimist, said the split gave him "an incredible amount of time to reflect," and it happened just before his 50th birthday. "Life is a challenge," Tom said. To be 50 and have experiences and think you have everything under control, and then it hits you — that's what life is. …L ife is tragicomic. You need a certain sense of humor."

Yeah, just laugh it off. Their split was so quickly resolved it's almost like it didn't happen — unlike, say, Ashton and Demi, whose unraveling took over a year. Tom is probably going to be asked about the split a lot as he promotes his new movies. He'll probably just stick to "look at the bright side..." answers like this, which is smart.

Is it weird to like both Tom and Katie a lot more now that they're no longer together? If it weren't for Suri, we'd think this split was the best thing that could've happened to them.
