Tacky or timely?
On May 11, Lifetime announced a new reality TV show tentatively titled The Houston Family Chronicles. The Huffington Post reports the show will star Whitney Houston's daughter, Bobbi Kristina; mom Cissy; sister-in-law and manager Pat Houston; Pat's daughter Rayah; and Whitney's brother Gary — with additional appearances by Dionne Warwick and CeCe Winans.
Lifetime states the series will follow the Houston family "as they take on their greatest challenge, supporting and guiding Bobbi Kristina as she faces the world alone, without the one person she relied on the most, her Mother."
Pat Houston said in a statement, “I have been working with Simmons Shelley over the past few years developing a project suitable for myself and our family. The unexpected passing of Whitney certainly affects the direction of the show. However, it is my hope that others will be enlightened as they watch our family heal and move forward."
Whitney died on February 11, 2012, so if an idea was in development for years and just got picked up for 10 hour-long episodes to premiere later this year, then they are definitely using Whitney's death for good TV/potential ratings.
Does this feel like exploitation to you or are you glad for the opportunity to follow the Houston family’s journey?
