Betty was back on Mad Men Season 5, Episode 3: "Tea Leaves," but she wasn't looking her best. The housewife's usually super-trim figure was gone. In-universe, this was because of a benign tumor on her thyroid, though devoted fans know that January Jones was actually eight months pregnant.
However, it's clear that the makeup artists and costume designers added a few pounds and a whole lot of wear-and-tear to January's pregnant face and body. Even at her heaviest the star always looked glamorous and glowing in real life, but on the show she looked worn down and doughy.
On an objective level, we appreciate this plot: It was interesting to see Betty grapple with her mortality, and we hope she learns something about herself now that she doesn't have her extreme good looks to fall back on. However, we found it hard to connect to her scenes, because we were distracted by just how bad she looked. To us, something about the transformation just didn't gel — it didn't feel realistic, which is a shock coming from the usually perfect Mad Men makeup department.
