With Fringe ending its five-season run on January 18, FOX has tapped a new series to join its lineup: Replacing J.J. Abrams’s sci-fi twists and turns with thrills and chills is The Following, a crime drama about a cult of serial killers — more Hannibal Lecter, less Dexter — and the troubled former FBI agent bent on crashing the bloody party.
Kevin Bacon stars as Ryan Hardy, an ex-agent who gained renown for putting serial slayer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) behind bars after the latter eviscerated 14 female students at the college where he taught English.
On a downward spiral since that mentally, physically, and spiritually taxing investigation, Hardy probably would’ve stayed out of the field had Carroll remained securely behind bars on death row. But this is TV land, where nothing ever goes quite as planned (just ask 24’s Jack Bauer). So Carroll makes a break for it, and the FBI recruits Hardy as a consultant for the team tasked with capturing the dangerously brilliant man once again.
The only problem? It quickly becomes apparent that Carroll has activated a network of murderous believers, meaning his criminal agenda has reached an entirely new level of twisted.
As if that quickie description isn’t enough to pique your interest, here’s the clincher: Kevin Williamson, the genius behind The Vampire Diaries, Dawson’s Creek, and the Scream franchise, is the creator and executive producer.
Watch a preview below, and don’t miss the series premiere on Monday, January 21 at 9/8c on FOX.
