The pants will not be coming back. MTV announced today that it is canceling its comedy series I Just Want My Pants Back after only one season.
If you ask us, the show — about six twenty-something New Yorkers looking for jobs and love (and pants) — was hilarious and relatable. However, apparently most of America would not be inclined to agree.
It debuted strongly, having been seen by more than 5 million viewers in September of 2011. However, that premiere episode had the benefit of airing directly after last year's VMAs. When the show returned in January of this year, the episodes were seen by an average of only 1-2 million viewers, with the finale sinking to fewer than a million viewers. And typically, that's not the direction that a network wants the viewership to be heading in.
Part of the problem for Pants was that MTV already has a number of new and returning scripted shows that will be filling space on its schedule, including hits like Teen Wolf and Awkward. Plus, there's a little MTV show that you may have heard of called Jersey Shore, which starts shooting Season 6 later this month. (Come to think of it, the Jersey Shore cast is often without pants as well.)
However, the producers of Pants are holding out hope that it's characters may live to smush another day, as the show is apparently being shopped to other networks. Maybe those pants just might be found after all.
