Comedian Whitney Cummings is rolling in dough. She has her own NBC show, Whitney, and she’s a co-creator of CBS' 2 Broke Girls. According to a new interview with New York Magazine, Whitney is on a path to make $45 million from the haul. But that hasn’t stopped the haters, or maybe it’s just fueling the haters.
Her NBC show debuted to scathing criticism, and she’s also had people questioning her looks. “I remember my agent at ICM at the beginning of my career telling me that I wasn’t pretty enough, that I was always going to be a quirky sidekick,” Whitney told the magazine (via Vulture.)
She also felt like she was the last to know that her new show, Whitney, was being trashed. “I was working so hard — either at the office or home, and never going out or online — and then one night I went to an NBC event,” Whitney said. “Everyone was treating me like I had cancer. ‘Are you hanging in there?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, this is the best time of my life!’ They said, ‘Everyone hated Seinfeld when it first went on the air,’ and, ‘You stay strong, girl.’ I Googled myself, which never ends well. I started realizing what was going on, and I went through trauma.”
But, yeah, she’s getting paid pretty well for her troubles, and she knows she’s lucky for it. “I haven’t processed it. It’s just a number on a piece of paper … and when I got the call about it, my first thought was embarrassment. That’s how co-dependent I am: I felt sad for people who had to feel like, ‘Why don’t I have this?’ It bummed me out.”
She can always share the wealth! She seems to have a decent head on her shoulders (literally, she's hot!), and her show Whitney has returned for a second season. Do watch that, or 2 Broke Girls?
