That Gene Hackman — he's still a badass!

On Tuesday, the Albuquerque Journal posted a short note saying the actor had slapped a homeless man that afternoon in downtown Santa Fe. "Police say Hackman acted in self-defense after the homeless man became aggressive toward the actor and his wife."

What's that about? Police in New Mexico confirmed to E! News that 82-year-old Oscar winner slapped a man after he approached the actor and his wife, Betsy, in a "menacing" manner and called Betsy some kind of derogatory name. (According to TMZ, the man called her a "c--t.")

The man called authorities around 1:30 a.m. to report that he'd been beat up by Gene Hackman. Something to tell the grandkids!

There were no visible injuries and no arrests made, and Hackman remains free to keep walking the streets of Santa Fe, protecting ladies from aggressive haters.
