Given that they wed in Italy and live primarily in Los Angeles, is it odd that Katie Holmes filed for divorce from Tom Cruise in the state of New York? Not at all, top celebrity divorce attorney Raoul Felder exclusively tells Wetpaint Entertainment. The move, he says, was strategic.

“New York is a state in which divorce filings are sealed,” he explains. “If she had filed in California, anyone would be able to walk in and read her complaint. This way, it keeps things as private as possible.”

That’s also likely why Katie’s team announced the split on a Friday in the summer. Notes Felder, “I’m sure they’re hoping to keep this as quiet as they can.”

Not likely, considering they’re one of Hollywood’s most high-profile couples. Still, says Felder, don’t expect an ugly, prolonged Kardashian-style split.

“[Tom] won’t want things to turn into a war,” Felder states. “There’s a lot of questions about him and a lot of questions about his religion that he doesn’t want to have to answer. I think this whole thing will die down very, very quickly.”
