What is he of legendary sideburns, Mr. Jason Priestley, up to these days? The ‘90s hearththrob will guest star on the December 14 mid-season finale of Psych (read his thoughts on the episode here), and that’s exciting and all, but let’s kick it old school for a moment, shall we? Jason Preistley first came to our attention as Brandon Walsh in the classic Beverly Hills, 90210, and we wanted to know if he’ll ever return to that famous zip code.

There has been some crossover with the old class of West Beverly and the new class: Several of Priestley’s former Beverly Hills, 90210 co-stars have appeared in The CW’s reboot, simply called 90210, and Priestley has directed an episode of the newer show. So will we ever see Brandon Walsh eating a piece of pie at the Peach Pit again? “No. No, I did my time playing Brandon Walsh, and Brandon has served his time on this planet,” says Priestley.

Our hearts are broken into a million pieces, but we still managed to ask Priestley for his thoughts on the new 90210, Gossip Girl, and other popular shows. “I've directed my share of this new crop of teen shows,” says Priestley. “The teens that they portray on television nowadays […] they seem so much more grown up and so much more jaded.” Priestley’s two children aren’t even tweens yet, so he’s not sure if TV’s version of teenagers is accurate or not. “Times have changed. Kids grow up much faster than they did 20 years ago. So it's a difficult line that you have to walk.”

As for why he thinks people are tuning into shows like Gossip Girl and Secret Life of the American Teenager (fun fact: he’s directed several episodes of SLoAT), he says, “They're incredibly aspirational. But they have to be. That's how they hook viewers, and that's how they get them.” So when his kids get older, will Priestley let them tune in? “I don't know. I mean, if my 14-year-old's watching Gossip Girl […] That's a fast show for a 14-year-old.”

Catch the mid-season finale of Psych with guest star Jason Priestley on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at 10 PM on USA.
