The actor had initially been attached to play Django in last year's film Django Unchained, and now he is revealing why he backed out of the project, according to EW.
“Django wasn’t the lead, so it was like, 'I need to be the lead,'" Will says. "The other character was the lead!”
Will apparently felt that Christoph Waltz's character was more of the focus of the film, so Will backed out. Jamie Foxx ended up playing the part of Django, and Christoph won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
Will says he even pleaded with the film's director, Quentin Tarantino, to change the script.
“I was like, ‘No, Quentin, please, I need to kill the bad guy!’” Will continues.
Will says he enjoyed the finished product, but he's still glad he didn't appear in it, despite the fact that it was nominated for Best Picture.
“I thought it was brilliant,” the 44-year-old Men in Black star says. “Just not for me.”
So Will is not planning to play a sidekick in a film anytime soon. Duly noted.
