Zooey Deschanel’s next big role? Loretta Lynn on the Great White Way.
The New Girl star/indie musician will play the country legend in a Broadway musical adaptation of Coal Miner’s Daughter, Loretta Lynn’s life story.
The 77-year-old singer shared the news during a Grand Ole Opry performance on May 10. After she made the announcement, Zooey joined her onstage to sing the show’s title song.
“This is a great honor for me,” Zooey gushed. “This is my hero.”
Sissy Spacek won an Oscar for playing Loretta in the 1980 movie version of Coal Miner’s Daughter, based on Loretta’s 1976 memoir of the same name. The title comes from a number-one hit song Loretta wrote and released in 1970 about growing up in rural Kentucky.
“It’s a long way from Butcher Holler to Broadway in New York City. I never imagined I’d see Coal Miner’s Daughter on a movie screen, and now I can’t believe it’s going to be on a stage for people to see,” Loretta told The Wrap. “I’m going to be right there in the front row. And I know Zooey is going to be great — she sings and writes her own songs just like I do, and we even have the same color eyes!”
