Michael Jackson on The Simpsons
Season 3, Episode 1: “Stark Raving Dad”
Role: Leon Kompowsky, a New Jersey bricklayer who pretends to be Michael Jackson
Why it’s surprising: The result of Michael Jackson’s Simpsons fandom and complicated contract negotiations, the King of Pop did indeed voice the character of Leon Kompowsky — a large white man who checks himself into a mental hospital — but the part was credited to John Jay Smith. Even more confusing? Jackson wrote the “Happy Birthday, Lisa” song (as well as “Do the Bartman”), but Kipp Lennon sang all the musical parts. At the time, Jackson was one of the biggest guest stars the show had ever had — but it all had to be kept a secret.
Bart: I can't write a song, I'm only 10.
Leon/Michael: Only 10? When I was your age, I had six gold records!
