Highlight: An Increasingly Open Coming-Out Environment For Gay Celebrities
As Mark Harris at Entertainment Weekly writes, it has become so much less of a big deal when a celebrity comes out as gay, lesbian, transgendered, or queer. Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons, Frank Ocean, Mika, Anderson Cooper, Gillian Anderson, Lana Wachowski, Andrew Rannells, and even the Green Lantern all publicly asserted their places on the LGBT spectrum this year. And instead of weathering backlash like Ellen DeGeneres did 15 years ago, these stars and their sexualities have been embraced by the general public. Plus, in this year’s Skyfall, even James Bond alluded to possibly having had a same-sex encounter!
Lowlight: A Disappointing GLAAD Network Responsibility Index
Unlike last year, no TV network earned an “Excellent” rating in this year’s GLAAD Network Responsibility Index, which analyzes the inclusion and representation of LGBT characters and personalities on TV. Worse, CBS, TBS, and History are “Failing.” But hooray for ABC, FOX, The CW, HBO, Showtime, and ABC Family for holding down the “Good” ratings!
