Did Miley Cyrus Pose Shirtless?
In April 2008, while in the throes of Hannah Montana superstardom, Miley Cyrus stirred up some serious controversy when she posed in a bedsheet for a Vanity Fair photo at age 15. With the parents of Miley’s rabid fans up in arms over the sexualized image, Disney decried it as “a situation [that] was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines.”
Miley was quick to release a statement to appease the Mickey Mouse crowd. “I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed,” she explained. “I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about.”
Famed photographer Annie Leibovitz, who took the shot, issued a statement of her own: “I'm sorry that my portrait of Miley has been misinterpreted. Miley and I looked at fashion photographs together, and we discussed the picture in that context before we shot it. The photograph is a simple, classic portrait, shot with very little makeup, and I think it is very beautiful.”
Translation: Cool it, people.
Now that she’s no longer beholden to Disney, Miley has let her racy flag fly: The 20-year-old wore little more than a blazer at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards (above middle) and on the March 2013 cover of Cosmopolitan (above right). In her world, bras are optional.
