Author: Don DeLillo
Synopsis: If this were TV, it’d nearly be a bottle episode. The majority of the action takes place in billionaire Eric Parker’s limo as he slowly winds his way through Manhattan on his way to get his haircut. Along the way, he loses an exorbitant amount of money, gets stalked, has multiple sexual encounters, and gets caught in a riot — at once amongst and apart from the city.
Movie release date: August 17, 2012 (limited)
Stars: Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, Samantha Morton, Paul Giamatti
Read it or see it? If Keira Knightley is the queen of period films, Robert Pattinson is becoming the king of adaptations: Harry Potter, Twilight, Water For Elephants, Bel Ami, and now Cosmopolis. He’s had varying success, but we’re interested to see what director David Cronenberg does with DeLillo’s novel. Thus far, the film has gotten mixed reviews, but it looks as sleek as DeLillo’s imagery. Though Cosmopolis isn’t as celebrated as, say, Underworld, it does have some interesting things to say (with the author’s characteristically impressive wording) about class, capitalism, and isolation. Sorry, R. Patz. We’re recommending the book this time.
