Miley in V Magazine, May 2013
With the release of her hip-hop inspired album rapidly approaching, Miley Cyrus seems eager to shed her Disney cocoon and emerge as a grown woman butterfly -- a butterfly wearing spikey leather shorts. In a photoshoot and interview with V Magazine, Miley and producer Pharrell Williams (best known as part of N.E.R.D.) talk about the new album, how their collaboration went, fashion, and image.
In the interview, Pharrell reveals he was partially responsible for Miley’s controversial hair change! “We’re down in Miami and she kept saying things like, ‘Yeah, well, this is what I think, but such and such is going to think such and such.’ And I was like, ‘You’re the queen of your own kingdom. At the end of the day, you need to do what other people can’t do.’”
“It was awesome [...] I’m like, ‘Why don’t I just cut my hair, all blonde?’ Because I’ve always wanted to do it. I got to pretend to be a Jonas Brother one time and I had to wear a Jonas swoop and as soon as I saw it I was like, Okay, I kind of look dope like that. And I never really thought about it again. And then Pharrell said, ‘That’s what you can do that no one else can do’,” added Miley, “I chopped my hair and bought a pair of Docs and never looked back.”
The hair, her don’t-give-an-eff look, and her brand new sound are all part of her letting out who she is. Miley is an artist coming into her own, coming of age, and forging her identity. Like Pharrell said: “told y’all she was different.”
