If Nick Cannon wanted to get people talking in his latest promotional stunt for his upcoming album White People Party Music, he sure succeeded!
The 33-year-old artist and host of America's Got Talent donned "whiteface" — covering himself in light makeup — before putting on a wig, wool beanie, and flannel shirt. The name of his Caucasian character? Connor Smallnut.
"It's official! I'm white!" he wrote in one Instagram caption. "#WHITEPEOPLEPARTY MUSIC #WPPM in stores April 1! Dude, go get it! Join the party!"
Then he railed off a series of hashtags that seem like entries from the blog Stuff White People Like: "#GoodCredit #FarmersMarkets #FistPumping #CreamCheeseEating #RacialDraft. 'Bro, I got drafted!'"
As Huffington Postnotes, some Twitter and Instagram users have commended Mr. Mariah Carey's sense of humor and his social commentary, while others have decried the bit as "racist," "racialist," and "hypocritical."
For his part, Nick is trying to focus on the humor of the ploy. "It's funny how people take themselves so seriously," he tweeted. "People love drama! We feed off of it. Just relax and have fun!"
