Not many fans were shocked when Nick Viall and Vanessa Grimaldi revealed Friday they’re calling it quits.

Even during their live Bachelor 2017 finale in March, viewers were skeptical about the couple’s chances.

Still, the season 21 pair did make it 9 months before ending their engagement, so there has to be more going on behind the scenes of this breakup than we realized, right?

For months now, there have been hints that all was not well in the romance. As far back as June, they were spotted looking “miserable” on the flight back from Evan Bass and Carly Waddell’s wedding.

Still, days later they were back to looking totally in love at his sister’s wedding, so Bachelor Nation assumed all was well with the pair. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.

“It's with a great amount of heartbreak for the both us as we have decided to end our engagement,” Nick and Vanessa said in a joint statement on August 25.

The statement continues, “We gave this relationship our all and we are saddened that we did not get the fairytale ending we hoped for.”

And now, we’re getting the true story about what caused the split.

“Their friends knew the relationship wouldn’t last,” a source tells People, adding that they were never on the same page.

The insider goes on to convey that their conflicting personalities were a major sticking point in the engagement.

The source shares, “It was a mismatch from the start. She’s super fun, bubbly and outgoing and he’s more of a serious personality and more introverted.

That contrast is said to have been obvious in group settings — events, parties, etc. — where the Canadian beauty would struggle to get him “out of his shell.”

After a while, they apparently realized these issues weren’t going to go away, and a wedding would probably never come.

“The relationship just wasn’t working, and it wasn’t what it needed to be for them to get married,” the insider states. “There honestly wasn’t a last straw or any real drama.”

Because this breakup was a long time coming, the source details the 36-year-old hunk is doing “OK.”

“It wasn’t an overnight decision, and they’re amicable,” the “pal” reasons.

Speaking out less anonymously are the Bachelor’s fellow alums and friends, Emily and Haley Ferguson.

The twins are quick to make the point that we shouldn’t believe everything we hear — even from contestants on the Wisconsin native’ Bachelor season.

“I think it’s funny that a lot of the girls from Nick’s season claim to know Nick and his relationship with Vanessa,” the Haley tells People.

“Emily and I were both fortunate enough to become very close to both Nick and Vanessa. We hung out with them not only together but also separately.”

From the Vegas gals’ perspective, this was a genuine, “normal” relationship that just couldn’t get past their “ups and downs.”

“They both loved each other very much and tried very hard to make their relationship work,” the Season 20 stars explain.

“Like any normal relationship outside of the spotlight, they had their ups and downs,” they continue.
