At Sunday night’s BET Awards, Nicki Minaj didn’t just win Best Female Hip Hop Artist for the fifth time. She also made a startling revelation in her acceptance speech — that she recently suffered a near death experience, and didn’t bother calling an ambulance for fear of what the media could say.

"I just wanna say that, the other day — literally I didn't tell anyone this — I really thought I was about to die,” the former American Idol judge revealed on the BET stage, according to E! News. “And I didn't even wanna call the ambulance because I thought well if I call the ambulance, it's gonna be on TMZ.”

While no one should ever hesitate to call an ambulance in an emergency, Nicki does have a point. The audio of celebrity 911 calls often gets released to the public, and that’s obviously not a very desirable outcome to a serious situation.

“Like I was saying my prayers to die,” Nicki continued, emphasizing the severity of what was happening to her. “And I didn't even wanna call the ambulance because I thought well if I call the ambulance, it's gonna be on TMZ. And I would rather sit there and die.”

But fortunately, the experience helped Nicki gain some clarity: That no matter what TMZ (or any other outlet) has to say, she should still live her life the way she wants to.

“I don't care what anybody gotta say,” she said. “I'mma do me. I'mma do me. And I hope and pray that BET continues to honor authenticity.”

We wonder what happened to Nicki that was obviously scary enough that she was in so much danger? Maybe she’ll reveal details soon. Either way, we’re happy she’s safe!
