It’s no secret that as a teenager, Snooki struggled with her body image and suffered from anorexia and bulimia. And we’re amazed at how Snooki has overcome such a huge obstacle, now tackling her weight in a healthy way — through fitness and proper nutrition. But it wasn’t always that way, and on this week’s episode of Dancing With the Stars, Snooks opened up about her former battles.

“Cheerleading was my life in high school,” Snooki said, “but it wasn’t always easy for me. I started to be anorexic, so I had an eating disorder and it got really really bad.”

And the root of the problem? Worrying that her spot on the cheerleading squad would be taken by someone who weighed less.

“There were these little girls coming up, like freshmen. They were literally, like, 70 pounds,” Snooks explained. “I was like, ‘my spot as a flyer is going to get taken away,’ so I ended up starving myself. I started eating one salad a day, and then it became one cracker a day, and then it became just one grape a day, to me just not eating at all for like three days.”

Snooki wanted to make new memories she could associate with cheerleading through her fun routine with partner Sasha Farber — and as far as we (and the judges) are concerned, she succeeded!
