The Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev may be constantly turning heads on the red carpet these days, but the 24-year-old beauty admits things weren’t always this way.

While attending TrevorLIVE, the semi-annual event for the Trevor Project, a nonprofit group aimed at preventing suicide in the LGBT community, Nina revealed that she was bullied for her looks while growing up.

“I had a couple of awkward stages,” Nina told E! News. “Now we have hair and makeup. I pay professionals. But you didn’t have professionals when you were grade three.”

For Nina, that’s about the time the bullying began.

“I had a chunky face,” she said. “I had a phase where I cut my hair like a boy so kids will find anything to pick on you for whether it’s true or not because it makes them feel better and bigger and it isn’t until you’re the victim that you realize that it’s not fun and it’s not cool… until you learn, you can hurt a lot of people."

It’s hard to believe that someone as stunning as Nina was once bullied for her looks but we’re so glad she’s talking about her experiences and giving picked-on teens hope for the future.

“The Trevor Project has helped so many people save lives,” Nina said of the group’s mission to prevent suicide among bullied teens. “And hopefully it will continue to save more.”
