Jaden and his famous father Will Smith dropped by Ellen recently to chat about their new father/son movie After Earth, which is set to hit theaters May 31, but Ellen went straight for the elephant in the room: Jaden’s emancipation request.
“I’m not going anywhere,” Jaden announced. “The thing that people don’t get is that everything at his house is free, so I can get anything and everything I want at his house, so I think I’m gonna be there for 20 or 30 more years.”
The inquisitive talk show host had to ask where that whole rumor came from, to which Will responded, “I think I made a joke in Tokyo. I mean, my baby boy he’s never leaving me ever! No emancipation for the Smith kids.”
We kinda have to wonder if it was really a joke to begin with, because the way Will put it toThe Sun recently, the boy wonder seemed pretty attached to the idea. “He says, ‘Dad, I want to be emancipated.’ I know if we do this, he can be an emancipated minor, because he really wants to have his own place, like ooh.”
“That’s the backlash,” Will continued. “On the other side, if kids just want to have command of their lives, I understand.”
Yeah, no parent talks like that if they’re just joking around. Especially Will Smith. Perhaps The Sun just forgot to mention the movie star’s low rumbling laugh as he chuckled the statement off, or maybe they missed a “Naw, I’m just joking,” somewhere along the line.
Then again, maybe the young teen was just messing with his dad? Maybe it was a practical joke that just got blown out of proportion? Who knows what really happened, but we’re glad the Smiths are sticking together. We would’ve cried if the coolest family in Hollywood suddenly split at the seams!
