Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon) seems to have a great relationship with his son, Mingus, but that doesn't mean Mingus still hero worships his dad’s TV alter ego. The Walking Dead star’s son with model Helena Christensen is 14 now — turning 15 right around the same time that Season 5 premieres — and he’s figuring out his own interests.
Norman was just at the 2014 Spike TV Guys’ Choice Awards, which we’ll see play out on Wednesday, June 11. While on the red carpet, Norman talked to People about not being much of an ass-kicker in real life, and how Mingus is growing into his own (mini) man.
"I went through his closet with him recently,” Norman told People. “We were downsizing and thinking what we could get rid of. He made a huge pile of Daryl Dixon clothes. And I was like, 'Really? You're going to throw them away?' He said, 'Yeah, I'm my own guy now.'”
Aww. Sniff. It’s Puff the Magic Dragon all over again!
Actually, it sounds like there might be a role reversal going on. Norman said his son is the “coolest kid I’ve ever met,” but he added that he teases Mingus by waking him up with “crazy loud feedback” from the teen’s amp and guitar, which are kept next to his bed. “I jam out and he looks at me like 'Oh God, Dad, put it down. Not again.’” Love it!
Mingus is apparently getting used to telling his dad how to act. Norman updated on his son’s current career interest. "He wants to be a director now. He watches the show and dissects it – he tells me what I should have done.”
TWD Season 5 is now filming, and Mingus may be a bit too young to step in to direct an episode, but The Powers That Be should keep him in mind for Season 6. Someone needs to keep Norman in line on set!
The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres in October on AMC.
