North Carolina Teen Pregnancy Rates Drop to New Low!

Let's give a collective round of applause to Teen Mom 2's Jenelle Evans, because we're pretty sure she's responsible for North Carolina's recent dip in teen pregnancies. This Southern state reached historic lows in its teen pregnancy rate, which fell a whopping 10 percent in 2012!

According to the North Carolina Center for Health Statistics, the 2012 pregnancy rate was 39.6 per 1,000 15-19 year old girls, which means less than 4 percent of girls in this age range got pregnant. Not half bad, y'all!

The reduced teen pregnancy rate was consistent across all racial and ethnic backgrounds, while the teen birth rate also dropped by 9 percent, and the teen abortion rate dropped by 13 percent. So, why is the teen pregnancy rate declining (you know, aside from Jenelle's influence)? Turns out increased use of birth control is responsible!

“Most counties have nearly eliminated pregnancies to minors, which is a tremendous victory,” Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Campaign NC CEO Kay Phillips says. “The best way for us to make additional progress overall is by helping our state’s medical providers connect young adults with the most effective forms of birth control and by helping our young adults know how and where to access the health care they need.”

As far as we're concerned, Teen Mom is the best birth control out there, so hopefully everyone will spring for cable.
