We’re less than seven weeks away from the official release of Lucy Hale’s country music debut album, Road Between, and though the Pretty Little Liars star is excited, she’s also nervous. She chatted to ANDPOP about the upcoming release. What did she have to say?
“I’m so grateful for the hours and effort we’ve all put into it, I think it’s going to pay off,” Lucy said. “I’m grateful its happening now opposed to right when I moved to L.A.” Lucy moved to Los Angeles as a teenager to pursue a career in music, not acting. She fell into the latter, but still calls music her first love, which is probably why the release of this album is so nerve-wracking and why she took so much time to get it right.
“I didn’t want to rush anything, I wanted it to feel right,” Luce explained, who would often fly from L.A. to Nashville on the weekend breaks from her nine-month filming schedule to work on the album. “I didn’t want it to feel [like] I was just singing these songs because someone gave it to me. I wanted it to feel 100 percent genuine.”
As a Memphis native, Lucy grew up listening to country. When asked if she thinks people will be surprised to see Luce singing country when she is perhaps best known for playing punk artist Aria on Pretty Little Liars, Lucy said: “Not many people know who I am.” But, it seems that might change with the release of this new album: “I think we did a good job of making sure that if I didn’t write a song or co-write [it], the story was something I could draw from, relate to, or something I’ve gone through. I’d hear a really good song [but say,] ‘we can’t do this because I’ve never been through it before.’”
What does Lucy hope listeners will get from her album? That you’re not alone in your problems: “In this day and age its not okay to talk about your problems. It’s a taboo,” she said. “[People say] what do you mean you’re upset, what do you mean you’re sad? People don’t speak about this stuff.”
Is Lucy nervous about the album’s June 3 release? Yep, but she hopes that “it speaks to [fans]” And, despite her nervousness, she’s excited for the release: “It’s a little scary, you never know how people are going to react but I’m looking forward to it.”
We’re looking forward to it, too, Luce! If you are, too, the album is already available for pre-order on iTunes.
