Kristi Yamaguchi at the 1992 Olympic Games in Albertville, France, February 21, 1992
At the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, France, one American ice skater captured everyone's attention: Kristi Yamaguchi. The hopeful that began skating as therapy for her club feet was suddenly a contender for an Olympic gold medal! She did end up taking home the gold medal in singles skating that year, at just 20 years old. Back in the day, Kristi, with her gauzy outfits and big, teased bangs, was an inspiration to us all.
If you grew up in the '90s, Kristi was all over your pop culture landscape. 1993's Hip to Be Fit: The California Raisins and Kristi Yamaguchi was a gym class video-day staple, and she appeared as herself in D2: The Mighty Ducks in 1994. She even played Jasmine in Aladdin on Ice in 1995! She was a staple of early-aughts kids' childhoods, too, starring in Freedom: A History of Us, the Disney Channel movie Go Figure, and more.
The 1992 Olympic Games were 22 years ago — so what's she up to now? Here's a teaser: she not only came home from the 1992 games with a gold medal, but her future husband, too. Click through for all the deets!
