Once Upon a Time Season 2: What Was in Mr. Gold’s Trunk in Episode 2?

How delicious are the scenes between Regina/The Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) and Mr. Gold/Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) on Once Upon a Time? You could cut the tension — sexual and otherwise — with that knife of his.

On Season 2, Episode 2: “We Are Both,” Regina busted into Mr. Gold's shop looking for his book of spells. When Gold came out to confront her, he casually flipped closed a trunk that was standing open, so we couldn't see what was inside. During their conversation, Regina said she knew he was up to something and it didn't involve going home to the Enchanted Forest. She flipped open the trunk about an inch before he quickly pushed it back down, then offered her the spell book she wanted.

Jane Espenson, who wrote the episode, took fan questions while it was airing. One fan asked the question a lot of us were curious about: "what was in the trunk @ Gold's store"?

Since pleases have not lost their punch with Jane, she kindly answered, "Items for Belle."

Do you think Belle (Emilie de Ravin) is part of the plan Regina thinks Gold's working on? Is that why he got so upset when Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) told him you lose your Fairytale Land memories when you leave town?

Since we saw Gold packing away some maps this episode, we assume he was planning to leave — probably to see if he can track down his missing son, Baelfire. Was he going to bring Belle with him? Perhaps the trunk was full of things for her to travel with.

Or — and here's a scary thought — did Belle already leave town and now she doesn’t remember she’s Belle? It sounds like she still has her memories in Season 2, Episode 4: “The Crocodile,” but with this show, you never know. (Though maybe Rumple’s best bet with Belle would be a total Ctrl-Alt-Delete so she doesn’t remember he’s a power-hungry magic man...) Do you think Gold/Rumple would be more worried about Belle forgetting him or about losing his own memories as Rumple?

And why was Rumple so protective of the trunk? Regina is already aware he knows about Belle, and she probably assumes Belle is staying with him. And back in Season 1 he basically told her he was planning to leave town once the curse was broken. So why did he seem so desperate to keep the contents of the trunk hidden?
