It’s been a long, difficult road for our favorite Storybrooke residents, and on tomorrow night’s epic Once Upon a Time Season 2 finale (Episode 22: “And Straight On ‘Til Morning”), we’re going to discover if the magical path is coming to an end. As it stands, magic-hating Tamara and Greg are posed to blow the town off the map — unless Regina can stop the fail-safe or everyone can escape back to the Enchanted Forest.
Regardless of the town’s fate, there is one person who we are anxiously awaiting to hear from: Neal Cassady, who plummeted through a portal to his potential death in last week’s penultimate episode. However, many fans — including the Wetpaint Entertainment staff — think he may have just landed in the arms of Fairytale Land’s surviving residents: Mulan, Aurora, and Prince Phillip, all of whom co-creator Adam Horowitz promises will return in the finale.
Is Neal dead? When we caught up with Mulan’s portrayer, Jamie Chung, at the The Olevolos Project Brunch Party Fundraiser today, May 11, at The General in New York City, she had a lot of feelings to share with us. While some were more vague than others, she hinted that “no one ever really goes away” on the show, and that there will be mind-blowing twists that will leave fans screaming, “WHAT? They did what? How dare they?!”
To find out exactly what she’s talking about — including her shipper thoughts about Aurora/Mulan and Emma’s true love — read on for our full interview.
Wetpaint Entertainment: I know you’re coming back in tomorrow’s finale — so excited!
Jamie Chung: Wait, how did you hear that?
Set photos of you all together, plus [co-creator] Adam Horowitz tweeted it... he hasn’t kept it very secretive.
I don’t know what you’re talking about! Wait, Adam tweeted it?!
Yep! It’s all happening. Give me a tease of what we’ll see in tomorrow’s finale, which is going to be epic.
The finale is going to be epic, so regardless, you’re going to have to check it out. There’s always going to be that surprising twist, so what you think is going to happen isn’t going to happen, and it’s going to turn into something else. I feel like no one really goes away on the show, you know what I mean?
You mean Neal is alive and with you?
I don’t know what you’re talking about! [Smirks]
Whether Neal is with you or not, it’s no secret all of the fans love Mulan and Aurora together. What do you think about that lesbian twist?
You know, I’m all about it. I support it 100 percent and I think there’s some truth to that in terms of how much she cares — I think she’s the only person who she cares so much about, other than Prince Phillip. Out of all of the girls, this is her true one best friend and it’s a special kind of love. So, I’m not denying that...
What happens in Fairytale Land stays in Fairytale Land...
I don’t know what you’re talking about! It is out in the open!
People also love Aurora and Prince Phillip together, of course, and our answer is that you guys just have a three-way relationship!
That’s a little too contemporary for Mulan... and myself!
She needs to defeat the Hun.
[Laughs] Yeah, gotta defeat the Hun! I think it’s more a journey and a circle of friendship and there’s certainly that love triangle element, but it makes things more interesting. But in the end, I think Mulan is happy to take a step back and let fate kind of takeover and what is supposed to be, let it be and let it happen. But you’re going to be pleasantly surprised. The guys [co-creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis] are so creative in terms of writing and the storylines and the characters and it’s certainly all over the place. I reassure you that you will not be disappointed, and it’s going to leave you literally like “WHAT?! They did what? How dare they?!” They can do whatever they want — it’s Fairytale Land!
You are one of the only people who hasn’t been to Storybrooke. Is that something you want to do in Season 3? I know you have an amazing new show, Believe with J.J. Abrams on NBC, but what do you think Mulan would do if she got into the other realm next season?
Honestly, I think there would be so much comedy in the fact that she’s so not used to being there … I feel like she would be so out of place, but that’s where all the comedy would be. For her to like go grab for her sword but there’s nothing there, or for her to defend her honor and she can’t. It’s so funny — I think there’s so much comedy to be had. I would be more than thrilled to join the team again; it was such an awesome experience, and I love everyone there, and I’m so happy for Ginny and Jennifer and everyone for Season 3! I love watching it.
And there’s the spin-off in Wonderland!
I know, I heard! Alice in Wonderland. It’s so good for the guys. So great.
As for this season, do you think Storybrooke will explode and go away forever? And do you think Regina can be redeemed?
I think Regina can be redeemed... if she can save Storybrooke. I think the whole moral of the story, and the great thing about this show in terms of Fairytale Land and the whole Disney wonderful fantastic fantasy world, is that everyone gets a second chance in redeeming themselves, being good, and changing. It’s all about forgiveness, and I think Regina has a really good chance at that.
There are also a lot of things that need to be wrapped up, like, do you think that Belle will get her memory back and be with Rumple?
I don’t think so. I think there can’t always be happy endings. That’s my prediction, but I haven’t seen it. My prediction is that I don’t think she will get her memory back, because Rumple will always be Rumple.
What about Emma? She has a lot of suitors on Once Upon a Time. I know you didn’t work with her much, but as a fan, who do you think Emma’s true love is?
Woo, that’s a good one! I’m not really much of a matchmaker, but I would have to say the Mad Hatter, because that kind of steps over into like three different worlds, so I feel like that’s better than real life. Fairytale Land, Storybrooke, and Wonderland!
With the finale, if you could describe it in three words, what would you say?
OK, first take: “OH. MY. GOD.” The second would be “epic, twisted, mind-blowing.”
Do you think Neal is really alive, or is Jamie just teasing us? Hit the comments with your theories!
