Apparently, ABC officials misspoke when they originally announced at upfronts that Once Upon a Time would be getting 24 episodes in its third season. The fairy tale adventure series will have 22 episodes in Season 3 — the same number as in its first two seasons.

We’re not too torn up about this news. Though we were excited at the prospect of having two more episodes to explore more neglected supporting characters, there were no assurances that those two episodes would be used to do just that and not to write in a few more meandering plot twists. Plus, 22 episodes is still a lot more than many shows gets. And, we have the OUAT spin-off, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland to eagerly look forward to, which we believe has the potential to be even better than its source material.

We do hope that the implication that the OUAT season would be broken up into two continuous strings of episodes holds true despite the minor change in the season’s length. Though we think there were some issues with the plotting and pacing in Season 2, we think the ratings slip seen in the show’s sophomore showing also had something to do with the inconsistent scheduling on ABC’s part. We’re hoping for many more seasons of OUAT to come, and we don’t want poor scheduling to get in the way. Love live OUAT!
