Kiss your powers goodbye! In this week's Once Upon a Time Season 3, Episode 17 (“The Jolly Roger”) recap, Ariel is back, Henry is apparently not a fan of snail mail, and Hook is very particular about his means of transportation.
Where the Heck Is Eric?
The episode begins with David and Snow learning that cribs are tough to build when you don’t have Gepetto to make one for you. Regina tells the couple and Emma that she has created a new protection spell to keep Zelena away from their tyke, but Emma wants Regina to teach her to improve her magical abilities. Regina reluctantly agrees but wants to be sure that Emma is willing to commit.
Emma tells her parents that Henry doesn’t have as much fun with them as he does with Hook — ouch! — so Hook teaches Henry about the important things in life, like weighted dice. While they’re bonding, the Charmings arrive at the diner with Ariel, who has just washed up on shore and is looking for her one and only, Eric. Clearly, Hook knows something that he’s not telling her.
Like a Bridge Over Troubled Water
Regina and Emma meet at the vault for Emma’s lesson, but Regina feels as though Emma’s heart isn’t in it. So she sends Emma to a rickety bridge that is quickly falling apart, which just goes to show that Storybrooke’s infrastructure isn’t in great shape. Luckily, Emma summons her powers in the nick of time and avoids going for a swim in the river below. Talk about an effective teaching method.
While David and Snow are busy handing over their car keys to Henry (that poor mailbox!), Hook and Ariel find Eric’s cloak at Gold’s shop. Belle puts a locator spell on it, and the cloak takes them to the water, but then the cloak disappears under the surface. Ariel realizes this means that Eric is dead. She thanks Hook for his help — until he comes clean and admits to having led to Eric’s death. Here comes a slap.
Ariel gets Hook to swear on Emma’s name that he’s still capable of love, and when he does, Ariel turns into the wicked Zelena. She informs Hook that he has to kiss Emma and rob her of her magic, or else Zelena will kill all of Emma’s loved ones. Kind of gives new meaning to the words “kiss of death,” no? Hook later watches Emma cast a mirror spell, as we learn that Ariel and Eric are currently living happily ever after. Looks like Hook has a tough decision to make.
Trouble is Afoot
In this week’s Fairytale Land flashback, Hook and Smee are back to their thieving ways until Ariel attacks him with a knife. She accuses him of kidnapping Eric, but Hook realizes that it’s actually Blackbeard who has stolen the Jolly Roger and is holding Eric captive. Hook is determined to get his boat back, and saving Eric is a pleasant side effect of that.
They track Blackbeard down and, after an epic battle, Hook traps Blackbeard’s foot in the floorboards and is about to kill him. Ariel stops Hook, explaining that Eric isn’t on the ship. Blackbeard has hidden him and will only divulge his whereabouts if Hook gives up his boat. No dice (so to speak). Hook makes Blackbeard walk the plank and gets to keep his ship, but he also gets a slap from Ariel for his troubles. Two slaps in one episode!
