On Once Upon a Time Season 2, Episode 4: “The Crocodile,” we find out what the dark and complex history between Captain Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) and Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle). After Rumple’s wife Milah spends a night drinking with Killian Jones (Hook’s real name) in a Fairytale Land pub, Rumple, at the time still a coward and not the Dark One, finds out that Hook and his crew have kidnapped her.

Rumple is too afraid to fight for her, and Hook calls him a coward. Flashforward to a time when Rumple has become the Dark One, and he spots Captain Hook walk into the very same pub. Pretending to be a beggar, he runs into Killian in the street, who notices Rumple’s sparkly skin and calls him “a crocodile.” Oops.

Rumple asks about Milah, and Killian tells him she’s been dead for a long time. Rumple challenges him to a duel, which they have the next night. Rumple begins to rip Killian’s heart from his chest, but suddenly, Milah shows up, looking every bit the Captain’s wife.

Milah explains that she fell in love with Killian back then, and wasn’t kidnapped at all. In exchange for her life and Killian’s life, she offers Rumple a magic bean that can transport anyone to other worlds.

Rumple points out the ugly truth, which is that Milah didn’t just abandon him, but she left Baelfire. She admits she never loved Rumple, and he uses his dark powers to crush her heart, killing her. As Killian is holding the magic bean, Rumple uses magic again to cut off Hook’s arm, and then disappears in a cloud of smoke.

But we’ll be awaiting the outcome of Hook’s promise: “Even demons can be killed.”
