While it's clear that Emma (Jennifer Morrison) has real powers on Once Upon a Time, the state of her status as a human lie detector is a little fuzzy.

Throughout Season 1 it was a little unclear if we were supposed to see Emma's ability to tell if someone was lying as a true magical gift, or just years of honed instinct. In Season 2 things got even muddier. We know Emma does have real magic, but she also appeared not to know that the stranger was lying about what he saw before the crash in Season 2, Episode 12: “In the Name of the Brother” (amongst other lies she's missed).

So what's the deal? Writer Jane Espenson recently stopped by Let's Talk TV LIVE, where she dished on all things OUAT, including this mystery.

"Her lie detector mojo's been pretty shaky for a while," Jane agreed. "There've been a number of episodes in which people have lied."

So what's the deal? "I don't have the official explanation ... but I think maybe that magic isn't working as reliably for her as she thought it was," Jane said. "I don't think it's worked reliably for her since Season 1."

Why? Jane speculated: "In the face of real magic, that could shake your faith in your ability to look at someone and know if they're lying or not. You got people who can make truth with a wave of the hand."

Hmmm ... definitely food for thought!

What do you think is up with Emma's "lie detector mojo"?
