For those confused about the resurrection of Maleficent in last night’s episode (Season 2, Episode 20: “The Evil Queen), you’re not alone. OnceUponAFan took to Twitter to ask Once Upon a Time co-creator Adam Horowitz about the reappearance of the formerly slain dragon/woman in a new form.

“Was Maleficent trapped in an undead form due to the spell Regina had cast?” asked OnceUponAFan in response to Adam’s tweet wondering what was confusing about last night’s episode. “So when Emma killed her she became undead?”

Valid questions, and ones that will hopefully be addressed in the last two episodes of the season. Last we saw Maleficent, she was slain by a sword-wielding Emma in the Season 1 finale in order to get the True Love potion stowed by Charming inside of the dragon. We thought that was the end of her story, but apparently not. It seems that some kind of enchantment has kept Maleficent alive, albeit in a creepy zombie form. We should have known Regina would have some sort of way to keep her only “friend” (not to mention the guardian of the failsafe, apparently) alive.

We wonder if the reintroduction of Maleficent will have consequences in the final two episodes. Watching her zombie form piece itself back together again and again with that raspy scream was bone-chilling in a way few things on OUAT truly are. Could Zombie Maleficent be part of the “sobering moment” that brings Storybrooke characters together in the season finale? Or is this a mystery that will be left for another time?

And, perhaps most importantly of all: Will we ever see her in her best form again? No, we're not talking about the dragon — we mean the awesome Kristin Bauer van Straten.

Do you think Maleficent will come into play again this season? And how did Hook escape her clutches? Let us know your theories in the comments below!
