UPDATE 2/17: In Season 2, Episode 14: "Manhattan" we learn the truth about August's box. It turns out Neal is also Rumple's son, Baelfire, and in the box August had his typewriter, with the message "I know you're Baelfire."

On Once Upon a Time Season 2, Episode 6: “Tallahassee,” a surprise appearance from one of our favorite mystery men answered many questions, but we were left with a whole new set of questions.

Eleven years ago, Emma (Jennifer Morrison) was madly in love with Neal Cassady (Michael Raymond-James), a fellow thief and Henry’s (Jared Gilmore) father. But just before they plan to leave Portland and head to Tallahassee to settle down, August Booth/Pinocchio (Eion Bailey) accosts Neal in an alley and tells him not to interfere with Emma’s destiny.

Basically, August tells Neal that he grew up with Emma as a fellow orphan, and they were in the same group home at one point. He also tells Neal how he knows that Emma has a very specific fate: to break an evil curse someday. August warns Neal not to get involved with her, because he could distract her from her larger purpose.

After getting to know Neal, we figured that he would be an instant skeptic just like Emma, and loudly guffaw in August’s super-sincere face. But then August opened up his magic wooden box, and showed Neal what was inside. Neal was suddenly a believer in magic.

So what was in the box? It had to be something so major that a bad boy like Neal would be convinced to abandon the love of his life, and their future together. Could it have been the fairy tale book, showing photos of Emma and Henry (and Neal?) together in Fairytale Land?
