Casting for the Once Upon A Time spin-off (now officially called Once Upon A Time in Wonderland) is certainly picking up speed. Last week, we got our Alice (Sophie Lowe). Today, we have our Red Queen.
British actress Emma Rigby has been cast in the part, according to Deadline. The 23-year-old beauty has worked mainly in England, with starring roles in Holly Oaks and Prisoners’ Wives.
OUAT in Wonderland will be set in pre-curse Wonderland and will follow the adventures of Alice, a young girl with a good heart and a hard life. If it is picked up by the network, it will be told in a 13-episode anthology format with the entire season as one, self-contained story (like American Horror Story).
The Red Queen is often confused with the Queen of Hearts, but they are in fact two different characters. The Red Queen is an antagonist-like character in Alice’s story who challenges the girl to a game of chess. The Red Queen represents the opposing side, but explains to Alice how she herself can become a queen by reaching the other side of the playing board. Alice later confronts the Red Queen for being “the cause of all mischief.” The character was played by Helena Bonham-Carter in the 2010 Tim Burton film.
This still leaves us hope that Barbara Hershey (Cora) may appear in OUAT in Wonderland as the Queen of Hearts - one of her identities in OUAT. Now that she has been killed off in OUAT, it would be a shame not to use her in the spin-off.
