Warning: This article contains spoilers for Once Upon a Time Season 2, Episode 5: “The Doctor”. Turn back now if you haven't seen it and wish to remain spoiler free.

The preview for Once Upon a Time Season 2, Episode 5: “The Doctor” basically revealed that the mysterious Dr. Whale (David Anders) was  Dr. Victor Frankenstein back in Fairytale Land. Now the episode is giving us a clearer picture of what that means within the context of the show.

It turns out Whale is from yet another world: Not Fairytale Land, and not our land. In fact, it's literally a world of black and white (like the original Frankenstein movie, get it?). He's aware of magic, but calls himself a "doctor," not a "wizard." His costume is evocative of the classic mad scientist, not anything magical. He thinks science is more powerful than magic.

We want to know: Do you like this twist?

Frankenstein is arguably the least "fairy tale" of all of the characters we've met so far. Yes, Mulan (Jamie Chung) and Lancelot are from legends, not fairy tales, while The Mad Hatter (Sebastian Stan) and Captain Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) are characters from novels (Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan, respectively), but at least legends and fantasy stories seem to fit the fairy tale idea. Frankenstein, on the other hand, is sci-fi set in "our" world. Clearly, the boundaries of who can be included in the OUAT universe have been very widened. It's kind of exciting, but also raises the question: is there a line? Can any fictional character be included?

Do you think this is a fun twist, or do you wish the writers had kept their focus on traditional fairy tales and fantasy stories?
