It turns out that Regina’s mother Cora knew Rumple before Regina, and he’d given her a magic book of spells. By halfheartedly “summoning” him, he appears in her bedroom. Regina is still the naive and soulful bride-to-be, and she doesn’t even know how to pronounce his name.

He starts to explain that he knew Regina “long ago,” and he “knew this day would come … We are back where we belong. Together.” Yikes! Mr. Gold quickly realizes that Regina is “kind” and “gentle,” unlike her mother Cora. She has no interest in learning magic, until Rumple offers Regina a little portal to a place where no one would be heard from again.

In the middle of a fight with Cora, Regina sends her mother through the portal, and admits later to Rumple that she “loved it.” They strike a deal. He’ll teach her magic, but of course, it comes with a price. We hear Mr. Gold say that unforgetful line that never means good things: “Someday, you’ll do something for me.”

In a roundabout way, Regina wasn’t really at fault for becoming evil. She barely had a chance with a mother like Cora. And in Storybrooke, she decides to “redeem” herself by letting Henry Mills (Jared Gilmore) go home with David, and telling him the truth about Fairytale Land. It still exists.
