We saw Bae’s past with Peter Pan, enemies link up, and a shocking potential death in the first part of Once Upon a Time’s Season 2 finale (Episode 21: “Second Star to the Right”). Did that make for a good episode? Read on for Wetpaint Entertainment's review of the episode, and then rate it yourself.

It’s no secret that magic comes with a price, but the price was higher than usual in tonight’s episode. Though Rumplestiltskin’s son, Baelfire, found a new family, he ultimately had to abandon Wendy Darling and her siblings to keep them safe. That pattern continued throughout the episode, tying everything together, but not necessarily tying loose ends up as the episode came to a close.

Though every storyline was thrilling (well, minus Snow White being a tiny bit useless), the most shocking was Bae’s relationship with a very evil Peter Pan, aka “the shadow.” (Question: WHY DOES HE HAVE NO FACE? Those glowing eyes will haunt our dreams.) Instead of wearing head-to-toe green, this version of Peter was a creepy shadow that stole children and wouldn’t let them leave Neverland. Unfortunately, the only person who understood this was Bae — until Wendy was whisked away and came back traumatized.

“Once you set foot in its soil, the shadow never lets you leave,” she explained, and the shadow was coming back to find a boy instead, planning on taking one of Wendy’s brothers. Naturally, that had to be Bae, since the kind-hearted boy didn’t want magic to hurt anyone else, but we were not prepared for him to be saved by Captain Hook, who is seemingly the good guy in this twisted version of Neverland.

Meanwhile, in present-day Storybrooke, Tamara and Greg were hard at work trying to destroy (or “cleanse the world of) magic. Watching Greg torture Regina to try to find out answers about his father was painful, and no one knew that better than Snow White. Charming came to Mr. Gold to cash in his favor, snagging a mix of Regina and Snow’s tears to guide them to the kidnapped mayor. As they were linked, Snow felt every bit of Regina’s electroshock torture, though somehow she couldn’t see who was doing the torturing. Weak magic, y’all.

On the note of magic, one of the smaller storylines tonight was how Mr. Gold told Lacey (aka harlot Belle) about his abilities, and in turn, she asked him to keep her young so they “can be together forever.” Rumple then explained his prophecy about his undoing via Henry and how the “complicated” situation has someone standing in his way. “I thought you were a man who didn’t let anything stand in his way,” Lacey says, and in that moment, the evil glimmer in Rumple’s eye has us nearly certain that Henry has a target on his back now.

When it comes to death, though, nothing was as sad as Neal’s possible demise. Just after discovering that his fiancée, Tamara, betrayed him, used him, and lied to him from day one, she shot him in the chest! And not only that, but after a brief hair-pulling, body-slamming cat fight with Emma, Tamara opened up a portal with a magic bean, trying to banish Neal’s baby mama. Sadly, it was Neal who plummeted into the unknown after a tearful goodbye and exchange of some serious loving words.

“If you fall through that portal, you’ll die, no matter what world,” Emma said tearfully (and we sobbed uncontrollably). “Please don’t let go. I need you. I love you.”

“I love you, too,” Neal replied before he slipping away, leaving Emma to save Storybrooke from Tamara and Greg, and perhaps avenge his death. (Revenge’s Emily Thorne vs. Emma Swan, anyone?)

The action-packed thrills, unexpected twists and turns, and a few answers — including Kurt Flynn’s fate, who was killed by Regina long ago — made for a stellar episode. Overall, we give “Second Star to the Right” 5 out of 5 stars, or infinite stars if we’re being honest. What do you think? Rate it below!
