It picks up where it left off. Right where it left off. You will quite literally see the Charmings still in their post-magic cloud embrace. However, you can expect the opening scene to leave you with some questions.
Everyone remembers! The curse is broken, y'all. What does that mean? It doesn't mean the folks in Storybrooke are transported back to Fairytale Land, that's for sure. It also doesn't mean that everyone's fairytale memories override their Storybrooke memories — characters will have both memories in their heads (though we promise the Charmings are back to kickbutt form).
And the Charmings? Speaking of: What is the Charming family reunion like? As we see in this sneak peek, Emma (Jennifer Morrison) isn't exactly all warm and fuzzy with her 'rents right away (check out this painful dialogue tease), thought Ginnifer Goodwin (Mary Margaret Blanchard/Snow White) does say the initial reunion made her cry.
So, magic. Yep, it's here. And yep, it's important. And no, it doesn't work the way it used to, as Regina (Lana Parrilla), especially, will discover.
Speaking of Regina... Turns out, the townsfolk aren't exactly in a forgiving mood when the remember what Regina did to them, and this sneak peek shows that she winds up behind bars. Lana Parrilla has also teased that Regina's primary focus this season will be on saving her relationship with Henry (Jared Gilmore).
As for the other baddie... Mr. Gold/Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) and Belle (Emilie de Ravin) will share some tender moments in the premiere, but expect Rumple to quickly be faced with the choice between love and power — a dilemma we already see a hint of in this sneak peek.
Meanwhile, in Fairytale Land... As we see in this sneak peek, the Fairytale Land portion of this episode will focus on newbies Mulan (Jamie Chung), Sleeping Beauty (Sarah Bolger), and Prince Philip (Julian Morris), whose stories will be different from the classic fairy tales you remember.
Another world? Spoilers suggest Emma and Snow will wind up in some sort of different world (or time?) where they are forced to bond. David (Josh Dallas) is described as "continu[ing]" his searching for them in Season 2, Episode 2: “We Are Both,” which implies they disappear from Storybrooke at some point in the first episode.
Once Upon a Time Season 2 premieres on September 30, 2012 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
