Up until the most recent episode of Once Upon a Time (Season 2, Episode 2: “We Are Both”), we were pretty convinced that Regina/The Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) was pure evil. After all, she is literally called The Evil Queen! But a new interview with show creators and executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis reveals that Regina’s character will be going through some big changes — including, possibly, becoming one of the good guys.

Well, not so fast. Adam concedes that Regina will still be an antagonist “because [she’s] at odds with what some of our other characters are after.” But as we saw in “We Are Both,” Regina was originally an innocent, naive, and well-intentioned young woman. She just had an evil mother in the form of Cora (Barbara Hershey), who forced her to marry a rich stranger and had her true love killed.

“As we said last season,” Adam tells Spinoff Online, “evil isn’t born. It’s made.” He adds, “To us, villainy isn’t black and white. Its shades would be a little gray, a little complicated.” This outlook holds true for Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) as well, they say.

Edward says that, “when [Regina] found out that Henry [Jared Gilmore] didn’t want her to die, I think it renewed her hope a little bit. She’s a different person because of this.” And to be fair, we thought we saw a much softer, remorseful side of Regina towards the end of “We Are Both.” She seemed sincere when she allowed Henry to live with David (Josh Dallas), hoping that he’s happier there.

Do you think the softer side of Regina in Storybrooke is here to say, or will she always revert back to her familiar, evil ways? Tell us in the comments!
