One of the biggest mysteries on Once Upon a Time involves Regina’s (Lana Parrilla) history with Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle). When will we explore their relationship further, and what exactly happened between them?

There were hints throughout Season 1 that their story is dark, complex, and, considering the fact that they are the only two characters with abundant dark magic, their pasts must have collided in the Fairytale Land.

In an interview with the Boston Herald, co-creator and executive producer Edward Kitsis reveals that viewers won’t have to wait very long at all to find out more about the troubled twosome.

“In episode two, viewers will learn how she met Rumplestiltskin and how she learned magic,” Edward says.

Magic, of course, will play a major role in Season 2. For a roundup of spoilers related to magic and how it will work, click here.

A popular fan theory about Regina and Rumple surmises that Regina’s mother Cora (Barbara Hershey) made a deal with Rumple to rise from a poor miller’s daughter to a woman of prestige and wealth. In return, she offered him her only daughter, Regina. Perhaps Rumple is the one who taught Regina all about dark magic?
