There are more characters on Once Upon a Time then you can swing a sword at and not nearly enough time to develop them all. The recent announcement and casting of a spin-off, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, has us thinking about what other spin-off series the show could support. Here are five of our suggestions:
1. Granny’s: Where Everyone Knows Your Name
A la Cheers, this show would be set entirely in Granny’s Diner and would see an ensemble of regulars share troubles (and milkshakes) in this favorite town establishment. Granny would be the main character, lending an ear to the people of Storybrooke while also trying to keep her business afloat in a town full of residents who want to swap tuna melts and apple pies for their favorite Enchanted Forest-cuisine.
2. Game of Badges
This one isn’t so much a spin-off as a Game of Thrones spoof. The position of Storybrooke sheriff has been held by Sheriff Graham, Emma Swann, and David Nolan. It is a much-coveted and sometimes fatal position (i.e. Graham) that holds great power. We would set this spin-off up like HBO’s fantasy epic as different factions of the town are pitted against one another in their quest for control. In this scenario, Regina is obviously Cersei and Rumple is Lord Baelish. We suppose Henry can be Arya, but only because we’re feeling generous.
3. The Odd Couple: Aurora and Mulan
Okay, we’re really serious about this one. We loved the dynamic between fierce warrioress Mulan and slightly pampered princess Aurora. We would watch episodes of these two trying not to get killed by ogres (and one another) in a post-curse Enchanted Forest on their search for Philip, and we don’t think OUAT has the time to adequately devote to it. Who’s with us?
4. Dwarf Rebellion
We like OUAT’s version of The Seven Dwarves. They’re a motley crew of friends who have one another’s backs. However, as far as we can tell, they do most of the manual labor in the town. What happens when Grumpy & Company (possible series name?) get sick of doing the Charmings’ dirty work and unionize? It will be like North and South, but with magic bean harvesting instead of cotton mills. Hey, North and South star Richard Armitage went on to play a dwarf in The Hobbit, so we think the parallels are already there.
5. Adult Wolf
It’s like Teen Wolf, but slightly older! We think Ruby is a badass character, and wish we could see more of her plights as a morally-conflicted werewolf. Dr. Whale could be her main love interest, and the two characters could be morally-conflicted together. We’re thinking that Whale tries to “cure” Ruby of her werewolf-ness in the first season finale... to horrifying results.
