Rumors have swirled about the Once Upon a Time spin-off since late last month, and though we’ve confirmed a few details — including the central cast, which doesn’t include the Mad Hatter — we didn’t know the nitty gritty until now.
First and foremost, OUAT writer extraordinaire Jane Espenson has joined the impressive team. Deadline reports that ABC Studios is closing overall deals with her and Prison Break alum Zack Estrin to write and produce the Wonderland-themed spin-off.
And for those who are sad about the Mad Hatter not starring (and in turn, portrayer Sebastian Stan not showing his beautiful face), we have some news that may soften the blow: the new series takes place in the post-curse world and there will be flashbacks, meaning that familiar faces could pop up. Most notably, this could mean the return of Cora, who was the Queen of Hearts in OUAT’s Wonderland. Long live the queen!
The spin-off will reportedly be told from Alice’s perspective and would function similarly to American Horror Story with a 13-episode series that has a solid beginning, middle, and end. It could bridge the fall and spring portions of Once — aka airing during the show’s summer hiatus — and is set to start production on April 7 in Vancouver, as creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis prepare a four-scene presentation for ABC with Jane and Zack.
This all sounds great in theory, but do you think we’ll ever see the OUAT spin-off on TV? Sound off below!
