We knew Greg Mendell was trouble when he crashed his car into Storybrooke, but we didn’t know who he really was... until now!
Though we speculated that he could be a number of interesting characters (including Peter Pan), during tonight’s episode of Once Upon a Time (Season 2, Episode 17: “Welcome to Storybrooke”), we finally got our answer — and we never could have predicted it.
We meet him 28 years ago, back when he was named Owen and stumbled into Storybrooke after it first “appeared” post-curse. He and his father, Ben, were camping in the woods when the purple smoke descended, and when the “storm” ended, they went into town to explore. Of course, once Regina finds out about them discovering Storybrooke, she freaks out, but then has a change of heart. She befriends them both, tries to get them to stick around, and ultimately tries to steal Owen from his father.
While Regina doesn’t succeed in kidnapping Owen, she takes his father back into Storybrooke while Owen flees, and when the little boy returns with police officers to try to find him, the barrier is in place, and Regina cries as she watches Owen realize his dad is gone.
When we flash to present day at the end of the episode, Greg is watching (and filming with his phone) as Regina rips Mary Margaret’s heart out and then puts it back in her chest. He then runs to his car, runs his finger over his his keychain — that is woven in the same way as the one that Owen gave Regina 28 years ago — and says, “I’ll find you, dad. I promise.”
The keychain wasn’t the only clue we saw in the episode. In present day, Greg had a Star Wars ringtone, and Owen talked about Star Wars in the past. Plus, Greg's general tone during his conversation with Regina gave us a hint that something wasn’t right. Hindsight is 20/20, though, so maybe we’re just reading into that.
Did you know that Owen would actually be Greg in present day, or did that catch you off guard? Tell us below!
