Swan Queen fans, brace yourself: There’s a big game-changer coming in Emma and Regina’s relationship on Once Upon a Time Season 2.

“Their relationship is going to change,” co-creator Adam Horowitz dished to D23 about the moment. “It moves to a new place.”

The two had a brief heart-to-heart in last week’s episode (Season 2, Episode 19: “Lacey”), in which Regina confronted Emma for not telling her that Neal was Henry’s father. However, Emma bit back with the point that she would have, but she was too busy defending herself and her family from Regina and Cora’s attacks against their lives.

Could the change be a positive one? Perhaps Emma and Regina put aside their differences to save Henry from the clutches of Tamara and Greg? In many way, Emma is the Storybrooke resident who is in the best position to give Regina a chance. Not only do they share a son, but Emma did not suffer the tyrannical rule of Regina in the Enchanted Forest. She doesn’t have as much to forgive (if we don’t count the rather large part Regina played in Emma growing up as an orphan).

It is just as likely that this game-changing moment will be a choice that forever ruins Regina and Emma’s relationship. Regina spent much of the first half of the season trying to do the right thing, choices that did little to endear her to the Charmings or convince them to give her a second chance. Has she finally and definitively given up the hope of being part of Henry’s life in that way? Or, maybe, Emma finally decides not to give Regina another chance and betrays her in some way. The best thing about this show is that anything’s possible!
