Once Upon a Time co-creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis recently opened up about the show’s venture to Neverland in an exclusive ET Online clip, and it seriously ups the anticipation for the Season 2 finale. The featurette gives a sneak peek at the two-part finale and delves into the motivations of Neal/Baelfire (Michael Raymond-James), including his love for Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison).
“There hasn’t been a day that’s gone by that I don’t regret having left you,” Neal tells Emma in the sneak peek to the Season 2 finale. The scene has Neal explaining to Emma that he wanted to look for her, but was too afraid that she would never forgive him — because he has never forgiven himself. Swoon.
“When you really love someone, you just want to be with them and to have to deny that is hard to yourself and it’s also hard because he knew he was going to break her heart,” explained Edward of Neal’s mindset when he did the abandoning all those years ago. “So the fact that he would add to the pain that he was trying to take away was really hard to deal with.”
The two-part season finale is going to be heavy on the Bae backstory, showing the boy falling through the portal and into Victorian London where he is taken in by the Darling family of Peter Pan fame. Much like the Lost Boys of Neverland, Neal and Emma have their childhood abandonments to bond over:
“One of the reasons that [Neal] and Emma got along so well and fell in love,” said Edward, “was because you have two people who feel like they were abandoned by their parents and two people who had to live on their own who were ready to let their walls come down.”
It looks like Neal and Emma are going to be having a serious heart-to-heart in the season finale (finally!). Will these two lovebirds work things out, or will their romance continue to live in the past? With lines like the ones Neal is peddling in that sneak peek, we have a feeling these two are far from over.
