One Direction Booed By Audience, Supported By Lady Gaga at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards

It was the fans at home that voted One Direction's "Best Song Ever" as the song that defined their summers, but that didn't stop the audience from booing the crap out of the 5-piece teen heartthrob band as they stepped up to accept their award. Maybe because most of the fans that had won the song the title with a whopping 8,676,163 votes were watching from home and not from the seats of Barclay's Center.

It does seem like a weird choice for Song of the Summer when Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," Miley Cyrus's "We Can't Stop," Daft Punk's "Get Lucky," and Selena Gomez's "Come and Get It" were all in the running. But seriously, over 8 million votes, which is a more than double what second-place winner Miley Cyrus got.

Justin Bieber, who has a similarly feverish legion of fans, was booed earlier this year while accepting his Milestone Award at the Billboard Music Awards.

Regardless, Lady Gaga wasn't having it. Not only did she have some choice faces for the naysayers during the awards, she had some kind words for the band backstage.

"If I did hear what I heard out there," she reportedly told them backstage, "I just want to tell you that you deserve every bit of success that you have, and don't you dare let those people boo you!"

How sweet! She continued, "I want to leave right now. I don't even want to stay anymore, because I don't want to be a room with people who'd be like that. You deserve a lot!"
